Collection Notes

Two collections: SAL177 and SAL182, from same general area. SAL177 notes (10/17/1956): Santa Cruz arriba. Alf Kastdalen. L. pimpinellifolium Santa Cruz type. Single plant found by Alf Kastdalen on the trail above Puerto Ayora; resembles the typical Santa Cruz type in most respects; but differs especially in (1) unripe fruits all have purplish color almost as dark as seen in some ripe peruvianum's; foliage, stems and buds also very dark, flowers show no anthocyanin; (2) plant very large and vigorous, prob. environmental; (3) fruits quite large; (4) seeds larger than normal; (5) hairs on uupper stem more abundant. Has jointless pedicels, stigmas not exserted. Said by Alf to be growing next to other plants without the dark color. Specimens and seeds from 1 plant.
SAL182 notes (11/1/1956): Santa Cruz, North country, 1000 m elevation. L. pimpinellifolium Santa Cruz type. About 3 Km N/NE of peaks in belt of forest below level of lechosa (papaya) trees; with tall Palo Santo, Opuntia, Matazono (sapote) trees etc.; rough rocky places and prefer high rocks; extension of population of indetermined size; saw several attacked by goats; it is difficult to ?? plants; plants chewed down to few basal shoots with very few flowers and fruit; other vegetation depressed but not to such an extent; pick all fruits possible and did not correlate those with respective specimens; specimens mostly small scraps with very few ??, so cannot say very much about the nature of this population.
Features that can be ascertained are 1. jointless stems, 2. dark anthocyanin, 3. hairs like Academy Bay, 4. fruit color = pale yellow, paler than Acad. Bay, 5. odor like Acad. Bay, and 6. stigmas slightly exserted. Appears very uniform as far as could be ascertained but need to grow progeny to be certain.
