Collection Notes
Chuquicamata. Solanum species. [later S. rickii]. On the hills N of the gringo village at Chuquicamata. Elevation +/- 3,000 m. In the quebradas and on high exposed places. A scattered population of some 15-20 plants. Is without doubt a Solanum species of the Juglandifolia series. Is closest to S. lycopersicoides, but differs in many important characters. Has all the characters of Juglandifolia series: 1) True Solanum anthers, 2) Pedicel joint (very close to flower), 3) Pinnate leaf (less dissected than lycopersicoides), 4) Woody perennial base, 5) No tubers, 6) Yellow flowers, stamens paler than corolla but not white like lycopersicoides. Stigma at right angles as on lycopersicoides. Differs from lycopersicoides in 1) Fruits always green-yellow, never black, becoming papery later. 2) No hairs whatsoever, no odor to foliage (wrong, a very few short hairs including glandular hairs are present, and a slight weird garlic like odor). 3) Plant lower, to 1/2 m high. 4) Peculiar ladder-like pedicels on mature inflorescences. Other characters: sweet fragrance like lycop. Alternations: 5,4,3. 4,3,3; 3,3,3,2,4; 4,4,4; 4,4,3. 4,4; 4; 3,3; 3; 6,3,4; 4,4,3. 4,3,3,3; 3,6,33; 4,3,3,3. This species is likely frost resistant and unquestionably resistant to low temperatures. Sometimes the inflorescences appear definitely to be terminal bu this is extremely difficult to ascertain. Note added for PLANTS OF CHILE. Erect herb, 20-50cm tall, fruits green, moist in immature stages, ripening to a dry papery consistency. Associating with Calandrinia sp.. Corolla bright yellow; stamens a lighter yellow color; style bent at right angle near stigma; anthers opening in terminal pores; pedicel jointed near calyx. Plant is perennial with a woody stock, no tubers. Close resemblance to S. lycopersicoides, yet differs from it in the following traits: 1) green color and paper texture of the ripe fruits; 2) near glabrous condition; a few papent and glandular hairs are present; 3) odor of foliage and fragrance of flowers noticeably different; 4) condensed inflorescence and elongate pedicels. Supplied to D. Correll [Donovan Correll, taxonomist at Texas A&M].
