SAL301. 7/31/70. Alausi, Chimborazo, Ecuador. "Saccha tomate". L. hirsutum f. glabratum. +/- 2,200 m. Population of +/- 10 plants on N bank and adjoing slopes of Rio, near bridge below Alausi. Situation very dry with few herbs in leaf. Yet all plants of SAL301 were in full bloom and growing rather luxuriantly. Most plants lack mature fruit and growing largely from crowns. Two with long branches (see photo) at least 3 m. long. These with fruits in all stages of ripeness. Fruit set very heavy. These two = SAL301-1 and -2. Some variation in anthocyanin intensity and possibly leaf shape, but could not be certain. All closely resemble the Guayaquil accession (LA0407?). No pollinators seen. Local name "Chimbalo" -- sweet taste, no off flavor -- said to be of no use. Fruits do not separate at joint, although flowers obviously do so, there probably = j-2^inc. SAL301-1 at least 50% of ovules are sterile; SAL301-2 no evident seed sterility. SAL301-1 1 large lot from several fruits, 4 single fruit lots, sent 2 to UCD 9/9/70. 301-2 1 large lot from many fruits, 5 single fruit lots, sent 2 to Davis 9/9/70.
Resistant to fruitworm (Helicoverpa zea) according to K.M. Irvin.
